I am very sad to report that according to an interview Fangoria posted today with Stuart Gordon, House of Re-Animator is officially (and very unfortunately) not moving forward.

The plot of this fourth film would have been that the vice president unexpectedly expires and Herbert West is called in to “re-animate” his corpse to continue running the country. The script is aimed directly at the present party in power and no one wants to fund something that is so specific to the current presidency.

Gordon is quoted as saying:

“We could not find funding for it; I think people are still too afraid of offending the Bush administration…I mean, here’s RE-ANIMATOR, which is a very successful franchise, but nobody wanted to do that story. People are definitely afraid. These guys are known for payback. Everyone is just counting the days until they’re out of office…It was sort of specifically about what’s going on right now. Maybe we could rethink it or something, at some point. But it’s just one of those missed opportunities.”

“Parasomnia” Update!

parasomniajeff.jpg

___
I just received some new information on Jeff’s upcoming film Parasomnia directly from its writer/director William Malone:
___
“I’m sure it will come as no surprise that Jeff did an amazing job in Parasomnia. I’ve been a big fan of his work for a long time. Jeff’s role in the film is certainly a pivotal one. He plays a burned out suicidal detective on the hunt for a killer who has murdered his partner. The chase leads him to ultimately to our villain Byron Volpe (Patrick Kilpatrick), a demented rare book dealer and occultist.

Parasomnia is almost finished after nearly two and a half years of work. We are currently out shopping for a distributor and hope to be able to give you a release date soon. I’m very excited about the film as it turned out really well and I think represents a completely new kind of thriller.

Oh and naturally there is a high body count.”

___
This is so exciting! Detective Garrett sounds like an ideal role for Jeff, especially with his interest in doing a film noir piece. Here’s hoping Parasomnia gets picked up soon and has the proper distribution it deserves!

For more information, see the official site and watch the trailer (Warning: some graphic scenes)

___
*Jeff was scheduled to be interviewed on “Independently Speaking” earlier today, but unfortunately, there were some unforseen technical issues with the switchboard and they couldn’t get Jeff on the phone. Hopefully, they can reschedule as the program sounded like it would be really interesting and fun. I would also just like to clarify that although the host said I run the site, that is our faithful admin David’s job. :)

SMALL UPDATE

Jeff’s film Wizard of Gore which recently had two screenings at the Boston Underground Film Festival, is slated to be released on DVD this summer! The film also just won an honorable mention in the Best Feature category at the Boston Underground Film Festival!

Caught Up
____
“I just think Combs is, by far, one of the best, most interesting character actors that’s out there–period.” - Darin Scott, writer/director of Caught Up

This is one of my favorite of Jeff’s cameos. Even though he is onscreen for less than three minutes, Jeff gives his all to this amazingly powerful performance. He plays an unnamed ex-security guard (introduced in a small scene earlier on in the film), who has held a very personal grudge against the main character, Daryl (Bokeem Woodbine who is also in another of Jeff’s cameo films, Edmond) and his friend for over seven years. These scenes enact the guard’s final confrontation with Daryl, a sort of showdown between the two.

*Dubbed as a “splatter noir” film by its director, Jeremy Kasten (with whom Jeff has worked on several other features), Wizard of Gore premiered at last year’s Los Angeles Film Festival. It had several sold out screenings and was received very well. It will be out on DVD sometime in the summer.

The Combs Triple-Play

Over the course his amazing career, Jeff has played a multitude of diverse roles, but there is one film in particular where he gets to show off his talents playing multiple roles!

___
Snide and Prejudice is a fascinating and funny look at a group of patients who suffer from “Psycho-Historical Schizophrenia” - they all believe they are famous historical characters. The story revolves around a man who believes he is Hitler (excellently played by Angus MacFadyen) and is being treated by psychiatrist Dr. Cohen (Rene Auberjonois). Dr. Cohen has a radical method of “exorcising” the illness from his patients by having them participate in historically accurate re-creations of the historical figure’s life. Along with the other patients at the “Temporal Displacement Foundation” are several out of work local actors who help contribute to the “therapy.”

The film takes a definite tongue in cheek approach and you never forget that the majority of these people performing the scenes are most certainly “not in their right mind.” Amusing historical inaccuracies pop up as well, such as when another patient at the facility who believes he is Picasso (a hilarious cameo by Mick Fleetwood) and several Jesuses intrude upon the storyline. Although it sounds a little strange, the film is a real must-see with a clever and truly original plot.

Several of Jeff’s films are in various stages of production. Listed below are his upcoming projects on the horizon. All of them look great and at least one will bring Jeff back to the big screen!!!

Some of these films will be released this year, other projects still have release dates yet to be determined. This post will be continually updated as I receive new information. For now, let’s take a look at all the great stuff we have to look forward to!

___

In Production - Latest Projects
___

Dark House

This is a new thriller by Darin Scott that recently completed filming.

Jeff plays Walston Rey, “the self-proclaimed King of Horror Haunts,” who turns a former foster home with a bloody past into a “haunted mansion for the ages” for Halloween. A young woman named Claire returns to the house in hopes of exorcising her past. When she and some of her acting students are hired to perform in Rey’s show, a new string of grisly murders begins and we discover the house may truly be haunted!

Jeff has appeared in several other projects for Scott, including Caught Up, Love and a .45, and the upcoming adaptation of the graphic novel, The Night Driver.
___
Steeltown (originally titled Mineville)

Jeff will be featured in this new film directed by Beyond Re-Animator co-star Jason Barry. The film is “the untold true story of Irish immigrant workers who mined the Iron Ore that was used to build the then new city of Manhattan in 1910. This is a personal and politically driven story about two boys, from opposite ends of society, struggling against their own demons to break free of their upbringing, As a glimmer of hope appears on the horizon in the form of a wealthy, so-called Union Leader, their dreams are shattered as they watch him take control of their town and ultimately their destinies.” (synopsis courtesy of N. Barry)

The film has an official site here.

This big budget period drama will start filming late in 2009. This sounds like an absolutely incredible opportunity for Jeff to be recognized as the great actor he truly is!
___

The Darkest Evil (working title)
___
“Combs’ performance is nothing short of amazing. He is almost unrecognizable, and not due to crazy make-up but because he really is the creepy Wilbur Whateley.” - Leigh Scott, director of The Darkest Evil
___
This is Jeff’s latest sci-fi feature that he has recently completed shooting in Lafayette, Louisiana. It is an adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s classic tale, The Dunwich Horror and tells the story of several scholars headed by Henry Armitage (Dean Stockwell) who discover the secret to destroying mysterious, other-worldly beings that threaten humankind.

Jeff plays Wilbur Whateley, part of a strange, inbred family that helps unleash these beings on to the world. Griff Furst and Sarah Lieving round out the cast as two characters that battle against the villainous Whateley clan.

The original “Dunwich Horror” is a fantastically eerie tale and the director, Leigh Scott has stuck pretty close to the original storyline. For anyone interested, you can read “The Dunwich Horror” here.

The film will have a limited theatrical release(!) this fall and have a potential run on the Sci-Fi Channel in the U.S. It will be released on DVD sometime in 2009.

The film will have a theatrical run in both Texas and Louisiana so far. More info to come!
___

Untitled Sequel to Abominable
___
“Think ALIENS and PREDATOR, but with Buddy and Preston thrown into the mix….”
- Ryan Schifrin on the sequel to Abominable
___
Jeff will return as Buddy in a leading role for this recently announced sequel to Ryan Schifrin’s oldschool sasquatch film. Pre-production will begin soon with a script written by Larry Hama (Schifrin’s co-writer on his popular comic series, Spooks). Hama is known for his work on the G.I. Joe comic series, so there will be a more military component to this film.

Big Sky

Originally titled, Western Big Sky, this independent dramatic comedy adapted from the play by Robert Tobin follows the story of a group of people who, over the course of a single day, aim to change their lives for the better after years of living the same, predictable (and comfortable) existence. Jeff will play Kevin Meselet, a bullying, rowdy “oldschool” cowboy rancher with a comic edge.

There is an official website here.

The film is now in pre-production and will start shooting in Montana sometime early next spring. This is going to be very different role for Jeff! Let’s hope this gets him the notice that he deserves as a wonderful actor, no modifiers needed! :)

Parasomnia

Jeff’s third film with writer/director William Malone (House on Haunted Hill (remake) and FearDotCom being the other two*). Jeff plays Detective Garrett, a suicidal cop in this horrifying love story about an art student who falls for a woman trapped in a coma who holds a deadly secret.

There is an exclusive trailer online for the film here and there is a brand new trailer at the official site. Warning: Some graphic scenes.

I am also thrilled to report that this film is coming to theatres!!! Jeff is going to be on the big screen again! This is so exciting!

The film has an official website, complete with dozens of great photos of Jeff and a lot of info on the production itself. Writer/director William Malone is looking for a distribution deal, so let’s hope the film gets the theatrical release it deserves!

It will most likely be released later this year. More details here.

*Jeff’s first project with Malone was an episode of HBO’s Perversions of Science called “The Exile” in which he plays an amazing role as a prisoner in a futuristic setting. The “twist” to this episode is quite unexpected and chilling. Although the series hasn’t made it to DVD yet, I’m ever hopeful it will!

March Updates

EXCITING NEWS!

Jeff’s upcoming film, a dramatic comedy called Big Sky (first mentioned here last year) will be going into pre-production in May and will hopefully start shooting by the summer!

Adapted from the play by Robert Tobin, the film follows the story of a group of people who, over the course of a single day, aim to change their lives for the better after years of living the same, predictable (and comfortable) existence.

Jeff will be playing Kevin Meselet, a rowdy, self-assured rancher with a comic edge. This is such a different role for Jeff and I’m so excited to see this project move forward! Jeff has always wanted to be in a Western and he has a wonderful natural talent for comedy.

This is also a role that will truly show him as a great actor, no modifiers needed! Let’s hope this gets Jeff the attention he deserves and leads to more diverse and wonderful roles like this one!

Watch out this week for a full update on Jeff’s upcoming projects!
